The island of Masirah lies off the Indian Ocean coast of Oman, being some 10 miles wide and 44 miles long. By the end of 1942 the danger to allied shipping in the region posed by Japanese submarines led to the RAF and USAAF setting up a permanent airbase on the island. In order to handle the large quantities of supplies a narrow gauge railway was built, which continued in use until the mid-1960s then fell into disuse. Resurrected by British serviceman as a spare time activity in 1969, trains continued to run until 1977. This is the story of this little known railway from its inception through to the 1990s. 17 maps/track plans. 8 line drawings. 69 b/w photos. 96 pages. Softback. Published 1994.
